Review by Sammy Stein

“'Mravka' is a great album – interesting and inventive music and a beautiful dip into Bulgarian-influenced rhythm patterns and vocal traditions. Coupled with the talent of those on the recording, this album is a delight.”

Review by Conor Herbert

“On Mravka, a fun album that wields jazz, pop, and rock with disarming charm, Bulgaria itself is their fiercest collaborator”

Review by London Blues & Soul Magazine

“The consummate musicianship and compositional skills are widely apparent. Dower has excelled himself here and crafted some heart wrenching moments. It’s an album that deserves to be heard live to experience the true force of this exceptional and powerful trio.”

Review in Bulgarian by BTVNovonite

(Translated) - “The best thing about Mravka is that in each of the seven parts of this ‘organism’, you can feel the smile of David Dower, you can sense the ease with which this this musician knows how to create music and get chills from it. When I asked David in 2018 what he dreams of in music, David said ‘I want my songs to be a gift to the person I’m writing them for’ - well, dreams come true, as it were…”

Review from “Pitch Perfect”
David Dower Trio is based in Melbourne, Australia, but given a cursory listen you’d swear they were a Bulgarian music collective. That’s because atop their Ben Folds-style arrangements they often use Bulgarian vocalists and lyricists and actually recorded in Sofia, Bulgaria. Their albums are a fascinating cultural mashup way beyond Paul Simon or David Byrne, of which Mravka is their third”

Review from “Song Lines” UK World Music Magazine

“The David Dower Trio blend elements of jazz, pop, rock and – on this record – traditional Bulgarian sounds to create an atmosphere that you can pretty much guarantee you’ve never heard or even considered before”

"Mravka" is the 3rd release from the David Dower Trio. Australian pianist David Dower teams up with long-time UK bandmates Matt Fisher (drums) & Luke Fowler (bass) to produce their most intricate and deep work to date. The album was recorded in Bulgaria, during the Trio’s fourth tour in the regionIt is the band’s 3rd album recorded in Bulgaria, following on from “Made in Sofia” (2018), and “There Are No Stars” (2019)

"Mravka" is infused with the sounds of Bulgarian music that initially drew Dower to the mysterious Balkan Nation, with Bulgarian choral harmonies, odd-meter grooves, & the traditional Kaval. These elements are intermingled with the band’s joyous energy, & Dower’s ever-melodic song writing.

The album features guest Bulgarian musicians, including Zhivko Vasilev on Kaval (a traditional woodwind instrument), jazz vocalist Vesela Morova, & a Traditional Folklore Choir made up of Rayna Vasileva, Pirina Hristova and Gabriela Milanova
